1. Introduction to Canada's National Parks
Canada is home to 48 national parks and park reserves covering over 328,000 km² — an area larger than Germany. These protected wilderness areas preserve some of the planet's most extraordinary landscapes, from the iconic Rocky Mountains to the remote sub-Arctic tundra, Atlantic coastal rainforest, and everything in between.
All national parks are managed by Parks Canada, which maintains trails, visitor centres, and facilities to high standards. A Parks Canada Discovery Pass gives unlimited access to all national parks, national historic sites, and marine conservation areas for one year — excellent value if you plan to visit multiple parks.
2. Top National Parks to Visit
Canada's first and most famous national park. Home to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway, and abundant wildlife. Banff town has excellent facilities for visitors. Over 1,600 km of hiking trails.
Adjacent to Banff, Jasper is larger and less crowded. The Athabasca Glacier, Maligne Lake, and Pyramid Lake are highlights. The largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world — incredible stargazing.
Wild Pacific coastline on Vancouver Island. Known for the West Coast Trail (one of Canada's most challenging hikes), surfing at Tofino, and old-growth temperate rainforest.
Contains Canada's highest peak (Mt. Logan, 5,959m) and the largest non-polar icefield in the world. Remote, wild, and extraordinary — UNESCO World Heritage Site.
UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its geological significance. Tablelands (exposed mantle rock), fjords, coastal villages, and exceptional hiking. Canada's most underrated national park.
Cyprus Lake and the Georgian Bay coastline with its crystal-clear water, rocky cliffs, and world-class snorkelling at Fathom Five Marine Park.
One of the world's largest polar bear denning areas. Remote wilderness park near Churchill. Best visited on organized tours — no public access roads.
While a provincial rather than national park, Algonquin is iconic. Famous for canoeing, wildlife (moose, wolves, otters), and spectacular autumn colours.
3. Activities in Canada's National Parks
Thousands of trails from easy boardwalks to multi-day backcountry routes. Always check trail conditions and carry bear spray.
Paddle through pristine lakes and rivers. Canoe rentals available at most parks. Algonquin and Kejimkujik are famous canoe destinations.
Banff's three ski resorts (Lake Louise, Sunshine, Norquay) offer world-class skiing. Jasper also has excellent winter activities.
Bears, elk, moose, wolves, beavers, eagles, and more. Best at dawn and dusk. Always maintain safe distance — 100m from bears.
Canada's national parks are a photographer's paradise at any time of year. Golden hour lighting on mountain lakes is extraordinary.
Frontcountry campsites (with facilities) and backcountry camping available. Reserve well in advance — especially for summer in Banff.

- Iconic Park Hotels — Fairmont Banff Springs, Château Frontenac, Jasper Park Lodge. Expensive but iconic.
- Park Campgrounds — from $15–$40/night. Reserve through the Parks Canada Reservation Service. Book months in advance for summer.
- Hostels — HI Canada operates excellent hostels near major parks. Great value and social atmosphere.
- Nearby Towns — Stay in Banff town, Jasper town, or Tofino for more accommodation options at varying price points.
- Backcountry Camping — For experienced hikers only. Requires permit and bear hang setup. Extraordinary experience.
